Early Planting Risks
Warm temperatures this spring have created the opportunity for growers to get into the field much earlier than normal. Planting corn early has many benefits that can be significant. However, planting that occurs prior to the optimum planting window, even when conditions are fit, incurs some risk. For instance, cold temperatures or a frost after emergence could impact yield, and crop insurance may not provide full coverage.
Drought Forecast
Planting decisions for 2012 are approaching quickly. A warm winter with minimal snowfall has followed a dry fall, which has raised questions concerning adjustments that may be needed to plant corn if dry conditions persist. The latest U.S. Drought Monitor forecasts that drought conditions will persist or intensify in the Upper Midwest and High Plains into the corn planting window.
Before Replanting...
Proper removal of a poor stand of corn, before replanting, is important to avoid volunteer corn competition in the second corn crop. University studies reported yield decreases of 0.6%, 3.0%, 5.9% and 11.8% when volunteer corn plants were at the following populations 1,000, 5,000, 10,000, and 20,000 plants per acre. For 2012, more Gold Country Seed products will feature the Acceleron® seed treatment system. Designed to complement new seed and trait products, Acceleron can improve stands and plant health to maximize performance potential.
